American Revolution Test Ch. 5 Flashcards
Proclamation of 1763
British king issued it
It prohibited colonists from living west of the Appalachian Mountains, which was Native American Land
There were three advantaged of the Proclamation of 1763 for the British
Helped keep peace between colonists and Native Americans
• Kept colonists near Atlantic coast, where British authority was stronger
• British could control westward expansion and the fur trade
Why di the British king send 10,000 British troops to America
To enforce the Proclamation of 1763 and keep the peace between the colonists and the Native Americans
Great Britain needed new revenue for these reasons:
Needed to pay for the 10,000 troops that were in America to enforce the Proclamation
of 1763
• Britain also had debts from the French and Indian War
• The British king and Parliament felt that colonists should help to pay for part of these
costs
Ways that the British increased their revenue:
The British government placed new taxes on colonists
• They also enforced the older taxes more strictly
One way the colonists reacted to the taxes
Some colonists smuggled goods so they didn’t have to pay taxes on them
Smuggling caused
Parliament passed a law that said smugglers would be put on trial in front of a judge
that was appointed by the British government, not in front of a local jury
• Local juries that were made up of colonists often found smugglers innocent
• Parliament also allowed customs officers to get writs of assistance – documents that
allowed them to search anywhere for smuggled goods
Parliament passed the Sugar Act, which lowered the tax on molasses that the colonists imported. Why did they do this?
Britain hoped this would convince colonists to pay the tax on goods instead of smuggling
them
• The act also allowed officers to seize goods from people who were accused of smuggling
without taking them to court
What were the reasons the colonists were angry about the Sugar Act
They believed it violated their rights as
War ligament passed the Stamp Act. What did the Stamp Act do?
It put a tax on all printed materials (for example: newspapers, wills, and playing cards)
How did the colonists react to the Stamp Act
They were outraged at the Stamp Act
They said that only their own assemblies could tax them
Samuel Adams
He was from Boston
• He helped start a group called the Sons of Liberty
• They protested the Stamp Act by burning effigies (stuffed figures) of the unpopular tax
collectors
Leaders of the colonies decided to work together. What did they do?
Delegates (or representatives) from 9 colonies met at the Stamp Act Congress
• They sent a statement to the king and Parliament saying that only colonial assemblies were able to tax the colonists.
Colonists urged merchants to boycott British goods. What was the result?
British merchants lost so much money that they demanded that Parliament repeal (or cancel) the Stamp Act
• Parliament did what the merchants asked
• However, they also passed the Declaratory Act, which said they could tax the colonists and make decisions for them “in all cases”
The British passed the Townshend Acts. What were these about?
From the Stamp Act, the British learned that the colonists would resist the taxes that
were paid inside the colonies
• Parliament then passed the Townshend Acts that put a tax on imported goods like glass,
paper and tea
• These taxes were paid when the goods arrived to America, before they were brought
inside the colonies
Colonists were angry at any British tax and began to protest immediately. What did they do?
Women joined the protests by supporting boycotts and urging colonists to wear
homemade fabrics instead of buying fabric from Britain
• Some of these women’s groups called themselves the Daughters of Liberty
British officials became nervous as the protests continued. What did they do?
They sent word to Britain that the colonies were on the edge of rebellion, or rejecting British authority
Parliament responded my sending more troops to Boston, who set up camp in the center of the city
How did the colonists respond to the additional British troops that were sent to Boston?
Many colonists thought this went too far
• Colonists believed that the British had passed laws that violated their rights
• Many colonists believed that Britain had sent troops to occupy (or take control of) colonial cities
How did British soldiers make things worse?
They acted rudely
• They were mostly poor men who didn’t earn much money so they stole from shops and
got into fights with the colonists
• They also competed with the colonists for jobs to get more pay
The Boston Massacre
Happened when tension increased in Boston
The situation turned violent when a fight broke out between some British soldiers and
some people who lived in Boston
• British officers tried to calm the crowd, but someone shouted angry words at them
• The people from the town started throwing sticks at the soldiers
• A soldier was knocked down and then the British soldiers began to fire
• Five colonists were killed
How did the colonists use the Boston Massacre as propaganda?
Samuel Adams put up posters describing the incident as a slaughter of innocent
Americans by bloodthirsty redcoats
• Paul Revere made an engraving showing a British officer ordering his troops to open fire
on an orderly crowd of colonists
What was the result of the Boston Massacre
The colonists called for stronger boycotts of British goods
