American Revolution Ch.6 Flashcards
John Adams predicted a long bloody war, but most people disagreed with him. Why?
Both sides thought they would win the war quickly
• The British planned to crush the colonists by force
• Most Patriots thought the British would give up after losing one or two major battles
The British seemed to have the biggest advantage at the beginning of the war
They had the strongest navy in the world
• They had a well-trained army
• They were supported by the wealth of their empire
• They had more people than the Americans
The Patriots seemed to be a weak match for the British
They had no regular army and a weak navy
• Their soldiers lacked experience and weapons for fighting a war
• Most of the Patriot army was made up of militia groups who fought for short periods of time and then went home because they were volunteers
How Americans felt about the increasing move toward war with the British
Some !mericans didn’t support the war for independence
• Other Americans were neutral because they were opposed to all war
At least 1/3 and 1/5 of Americans were Loyalists or Tories, people who remained loyal to Britain and were against independence
