Why did Britain want colonies
So they were able to tax the people, and also so that they could make the colonies buy British products
What happened in 1756
In 1756, Britain sent troops to the 13 colonies, to protect them from France and the Native Americans. They suggested that the colonists were to pay some costs of the troops, and they taxed the colonists. However, the colonists objected and were unhappy
What was the stamp tax of 1765?
Introduced in 1765, Tax on documents such as legal papers and newspapers. People responded by rioting
What was the navigation act
Passed in 1651by Oliver Cromwell. Colonies could only buy British imports, and no trading. Colonists were only allowed to buy British products
Why were the colonists upset
They felt bossed by the British. As they were given boundaries on pieces of land. The brits made agreements with the indigenous Americans without consulting the colonists.
American colonists were ruled directly by Britain, and they had no representatives in parliament. They felt like no one was speaking out for them. They wanted representation in parliament. They began identifying as Americans
No taxation without representation.
What was the Boston massacre of 1770
1770, 5 march
anti British colonists threw snowballs and sticks at British army.
British army opened fire and killed some
Unrest in Boston began to grow
People were unhappy with the heavy taxation of tea
Boston tea party 1773
- Unhappy with the heavy taxation of tea. They boarded ships and poured tea into the harbour as a form of protest. This act scared the British, and caused them to close the port of Boston

When was the start of the American revolution
1775, Lexington incident. 1775, 20,000 (minutemen) colonists (farmers) fired upon British army while they tried to seize gunpowder supply. Start of the revolution
What was the Declaration of Independence 1776?
They met in congress and decided what to do. George Washington was appointed leader of the island.
1776, Declaration of Independence was issued. Stated that 13 colonies were free from British rule. They fought for 7 years, and colonists won.
