Explain the navigation act
The Navigation Acts were an example of the control that Britain wanted
They stated that products being exported from/imported to America could only be carried by British ships
Some American products, such as sugar, cotton and tobacco could only be sold to Britain
These laws led to smuggling by the Americans which led to clashes with the British
The stamp act
Americans had to have newspapers, wills, licences and legal documents stamped by government officials who made them pay for this
The Stamp Act led to riots, stamps were burnt and stamp officials were attacked
The Americans believed the British parliament had no right to impose these taxes as they weren’t even represented there

American Opposition Grows
The British government backed down against this opposition and ended the Stamp Act
However they continued with the policy of taxing the colonies
The Townsend Acts were introduced – these were taxes on imported goods such as glass and tea
The Americas reacted by refusing to buy these goods and smuggled them instead
Boston Massacre and Tea Party
American resistance was centred in Boston, customs officials were tarred and feathered
When an angry crowd stoned British troops the soldiers opened fire killing five people
The Americans called this the Boston Massacre
In 1773, the Tea Act was passed and granted the British East India Company a monopoly on tea sales in the American colonies which resulted in further protests
In December 1773 Americans disguised as Indians dumped crates of tea from British ships into Boston Harbour
The Intolerable Acts
The Boston Tea Party led the British government to close the port and impose martial law
The First Continental Congress
Representatives from twelve of the thirteen colonies met in Philadelphia and called on all Americans not to buy British goods until the Intolerable Acts were removed
