A

A

How did the British colonies in North America benefit from the Seven Years’ War with France?

A

The British colonies in North America profited considerably from the Seven Years’ War with France. They experienced the removal of French forts and agents that impeded their progress into the Mississippi, and the English navy provided them with protection while Britain became a guaranteed market for American goods.

A

1st: people were willing to suffer in turn for a society freer and more tolerant than England could offer.

2nd: colonies developed a economy with england exchanging sugar, forest products, tobacco and furs for slaves, food products and manuafactured articles.

A

Stamp Act was introduced in 1765 which forced the Americans to buy official stamps and put them on all legal documents.

How did colonies act/behave when the stamp and taxation act were introduced?

A

The colonists claimed that they were not represented in the British Parliament and should not have to pay. ‘No taxation without representation’ became their popular cry’.

How did the British reply when the colonies started protesting?

A

The opposition of the colonists was successful in removing the stamp tax but Parliament then imposed import duties on goods that were needed in America: lead, glass, paper, paint and tea.

How did the coloniests reply to import duties?

A

The colonists replied by boycotting these articles so that the taxes were eventually removed except for that on tea. However, further troubles came when the British tried to sell surplus shipments of Indian tea to the colonists. The British allowed the East India Company to use its agents instead of selling through American retailers. The colonists boarded ships in Boston harbour and threw chests of tea into the sea.

A

A series of four laws passed by the British Parliament to punish the colony of Massachusetts Bay for the Boston Tea Party

A

Colonists began to arm themselves and protest against the Coercive Acts at the Continental Congress in 1774.

What was a major reason for the growing revolutionary spirit in America?

A

the character of the men who led the movement. George Washington himself exerted a tremendous influence on the revolution. So too did writers and thinkers like John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.

A

Each of the thirteen colonies sent delegates to a congress which met in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787. The documents these representatives produced became the Constitution of the United States of America.
