Roosevelt vice president took over when he died. Re-elected for second term, bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end World War II. Truman doctrine to contain communism and Marshall plan to rebuild Eastern Europe to stop communism spreading. Berlin blockade

Dwight Eisenhower (Republican) Two terms of office, worried about communism, domino theory, some help toVietnam given. McCarthy Communist witchhunts, ordered desegregation of schools in Arkansas, signed civil rights acts of 1957 and 1960.

John F Kennedy (democrat)
Youngest president, assassinated in 1963, supported civil rights, space race, new frontier ideas, Cuban missile crisis, sent troops into Vietnam as advisors

Lyndon B Johnson (Democrat)
JFK’s vice president. Great society programs for America. Escalates American involvement in Vietnam
1969 to 1974
Richard Nixon (republican) Had been defeated by JFK in 1961. Very anti communist but ended war in Vietnam for America and started détente of Cold War, visited China. Watergate scandal forced him to resign

Gerald Ford (Republican) Took over after Nixon's resignation and carried on his policies

Jimmy Carter (Democrat)
Surprise winner, son of a peanut farmer.
Seen as weak after the seizing of the Embassy in Tehran by terrorists.
Cold War restarts due to Soviet invasion of Afghanistan
1981 to 1989
Ronald Reagan (Republican) Form a movie star so very good at manipulating the media. Anti-Communist – pursues second Cold War– Star Wars. Ends Cold War by meeting with Soviet leader Gorbachev

George Bush senior (Republican)
Had been Reagans vice president, Gulf War. continued Reagan’s policies

Bill Clinton (democrat)
Job before election: lawyer, politician.
Monica Lewinsky scandal.
