a political system in which power is divided between a central government and smaller regional governments
Federalism
political system in which authority comes from the people and is exercised by elected officials
Republicanism
Basic principle of American government which states that government is restricted in what it may do, and each individual has rights that government cannot take away popular sovereignty.
Limited government
the principle that government is based on clear and fairly enforced laws and that no one is above the law
Rule of Law
Political power resides with the people and the national government draws its power from the people.
Popular Sovereignty
the idea that powers of a government should be split into two more strongly independent branches to prevent any one person form gaining too much power
Separation of Powers
also called enumerated powers, powers delegated to the national government that are spelled out expressly in the constitution.
Delegated Powers
are powers that the constitution does not grant to the states, nor does it deny it to the states.
Reserved Powers
Powers held by both the national government and the states. Examples: Power to levy and collect taxes, to define crimes and set punishments for them.
Concurrent Powers
What is the purpose of the preamble?
The preamble to the constitution is the introduction and states the purpose of the constitution.
What is the structure of the constitution?
the preamble, the 7 articles (the branches), and then the admendments
What are the 7 articles?
- Defines the leg branch
- Defines the executive branch
- Sets up the judicial branch and treason
- Regulates the states powers and the interaction with the national government
- Sets up the amendment process
- Sets the constitution as the supreme law of the land
- 9 out of the 13 states must ratify
What is the Amendment Process?
Step One: Amendment is proposed
Step Two: Amendment is ratified
Step Three: Amendment may be posed by a national convention
Step Four: Amendment may be ratified and proposed
What are the amendments 11-15?
11th amendment- Lawsuits against states (1795)
12th amendment- President and vice president elected as a team.
13th amendment- Slavery Abolished.
14th amendment- Civil rights, If born in the United States you are a citizen of the United States.
15th amendment- Right to vote.
What are the amendments 16-19?
16th amendment- Income tax.
17th amendment- Direct election of senators.
18th amendment- Prohibition, no alcohol or buying or selling of alcohol.
19th amendment- Women’s suffrage, The right to vote.
