Founded by Katz and Blumler, the uses and gratifications theory tries to understand why people use certain types of media.
e.g. escapism, information, social, personal identity
What is Audience Response/Reception Theory?
Created by Stuart Hall, he explored how people make sense of media texts and claimed audiences were active not passive.
(An active audience engages, interprets, and responds
A passive audience accept messages with no challenge)
