Unionists
individuals or groups who supported the preservation of the United States and opposed the secession of the Southern states. They were loyal to the federal government and sought to maintain the unity of the country.
Pendleton Act (1881)
The Pendleton Act, passed in 1883, established a merit-based system for federal government jobs, reducing political patronage and promoting competence and expertise in civil service hiring. It also created the United States Civil Service Commission to oversee the new system.
Jimmy Carter
Jimmy Carter is an American politician who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981.
