  • Bc they don’t have health insurance
  • No NHS - buy health insurance - Blue Cross & Blue Sheild
  • Expensive - can’t afford - make less healthy bc don’t benefit from regular check ups - 2x more likely to die than insured person
  • Live in one of 22 Republican states, Texas, refused to expand Obamacare’s Medicaid - Medicaid gives free healthcare to poorest
  • earn too much to qualify - too poor for health insurance- 5 million people affected as a result poorer health

  • Affordable Health Care Act 2010 (Obamacare) introduced to tackle the problem that a large amount of people could not afford health insurance
  • Made having health insurance compulsory
  • Government will help poorest afford it by expanding Medicaid which provides healthcare for the poor

•Cracking down on insurance company abuse by
-no more limits on amount of treatment
- people with pre-existing conditions can’t
be denied treatment

•Meant companies with 50 and over employees have to buy them health insurance

A

•Worried about the expense needed to pay for it at time of economic depression
- cost $110 billion in 2016 alone
-annoyed that taxes will need to be raised
- don’t want to raise taxes to support poor
at time of economic depression

•Some Republican states not expanded Medicaid
- some ppl in these states, Texas, too rich
4 Medicaid too poor 4 health insurance
- results poorer health lower life expecta
- 5 million affected

•Increase Unemployment
- companies >50 employees hve to
provide health care for staff
- cause unemployment, limit staff 49
- Congress budgets in 2014 predicted OC
would cut US workforce by ~ 2.3million

•Insurance now compulsory so no.of uninsured dropped dramatically

    - 2010 16% of pop had no healthcare
    - 2016 10% of pop had no healthcare

•changed poverty limit for those to qualify for Medicaid
-states that expanded Medicaid seen
biggest decline in uninsured
- specifically helping ethnic minorities
48% Medicaid from Ethnic mins even tho
they only make up 30% of pop

•prevent abuse by insurance companies

     - no longer limit amount of treatment
     - not denying pre-existing conditions
