fascist government - nationalism - imperialistic - fear of communism - exploited fear of communism to return Italy to its former glory - blackshirts: fascist militia backing Mussolini
Stalin and the USSR
1942 - Stalin and trotsky - Stalin had a 5 yr plan to industrialize the USSR - 4-18 mil. tons of steel from 1928-1937 - wages declined - family farms because collectives owned by the gov. - concentration camps - 2 mil people - 8-10 million people died under stalins rule
Hitler and Nazi Germany
anti-communist - admired mussolini - fought in ww1 - nazi’s: nationalistic and anti communist - broke treaty of versailles - Hitler was arrested and wrote mein kampf - my struggle - calling for unification = said blonde blue eyed germans were superior - Jews are responsible for Germany losing ww1 - got nazi’s into Reichstag - became prime minister

bad economy - didn’t have enough money for imports bc of tariffs - blamed corrupt politicians - invaded to get resources - prime minister killed by chine when negotiating terms - military controls the country - 1931 invaded Manchuria, China - very wealthy region
isolationism
became popular in 1930s - believed the US shouldn’t interfere in the war - or help out GB or Europe - bc believed that arms manufacturers brought them into ww1
Nye Commitee
documented arm factories profits - Gerald p. Nye - investigated allegations abt arms bringing them into ww1
Neutrality Acts
1935 - illegal to sell arms to other countries - 1936 - act to only buy things from the US - if other countries wanted things they had to send their ships to get things from the us
Axis Powers
Japan, Germany, Italy - anti-communists - exchanged info abt communist areas
FDR and Internationalism
1st priority - end GD - internationalist - trade between countries creates property and helps prevent war - wanted to help GB - FDR was against neutrality acts - but didn’t veto them - 1937 Japan attacks china and FDR helps china - no one declares war - so didn’t break acts
Cash and Carry
US could sell nations to nations in the war as long as they paid in cash and had their own ships pick up the goods
