What is the federal system?
All the individual states look after their own internal affairs. Issues that affect all states are dealt with by congress.
What is the constitution?
A document that details how the government is supposed to operate and what it is allowed to do
Who is the president?
The leader of the USA who is elected every 4 years
What is congress?
The senate + the house of representatives, the congress and the president run the country
What is the supreme court?
Judges make sure that the government do not misuse their power or pass unfair laws. They have the power to decide whether a law is unconstitutional.
What did the republicans prefer to do?
Stay out of peoples lives
What did the democrats prefer to do?
Intervene in peoples lives
What is ‘laissez faire’?
‘Leave it alone’. The government should do as little as possible to interfere in people’s everyday lives.
What are tariffs?
Taxes placed on imported goods from foreign countries
