first 10 amendments of the US Constitution
1st Amendment
- freedom of religious exercise
- freedom of speech
- freedom to assemble
- freedom to petition
- freedom of the press
2nd Amendment
right to bear arms for a well regulated militia
3rd Amendment
freedom from quartering soldiers
quartering = housing
4th Amendment
freedom from unreasonable searches/seizures
warrants must only be issued upon probable cause and should be specific
5th Amendment
- Criminal indictments must be by grand jury
- freedom from double jeopardy
- freedom from testifying against oneself
- right to face accusers
- right to due process
- right of just compensation for takings
6th Amendment
- right to speedy trial
- right to impartial jury
- right to be informed of the charges upon which the accused is held
- right to face accusers
- right to produce witnesses for the accused
- right to a lawyer (legal counsel)
7th Amendment
- Right to jury trial in civil cases
- Facts found by a jury can’t be reexamined by another court
8th Amendment
- Freedom from excessive bail/fines
- Freedom from cruel/unusual punishment
9th Amendment
- People have rights that aren’t listed in the Constitution
- Right to privacy
10th Amendment
Federal government has only powers specifically granted by the constitution, any power not listed is left to the states or the people
13th Amendment
Right to not be a slave
14th Amendment
- Right to citizenship
- Equal protection of natuonal/state laws
- Right to be free of any law that deprives a person of life, liberty or property without due process
15th Amendment
Right to vote, extended racial and ethnic minorities
17th Amendment
Right to vote for Senators
19th Amendment
Women can vote
23rd Amendment
Residents of Washington DC may vote for presidential electors
24th Amendment
Right to vote without a poll tax
26th Amendment
18+ can vote
