to create a pan-german state uniting ethnic germans in the emergence of the Herrenvolk (master race), and to do this would need raw materials + slave labour –> lebensraum policy = expansion into eastern europe, restore honour of Germany internationally

Answer 3

Imperialist expansion to secure land and raw materials for growing population, dominance necessary for national security + self-sufficiency. As of 1940: Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere led by Japan

• Japan invades Manchuria + sets up puppet state (Manchuko) - 1931
• attempts to invade rest of china but fails in 1937 (Marco Polo bridge Incident)
• pisses off America, which starts myriad embargoes against them
