Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) Flashcards
What are the main areas of application for AAL Technologies?
- coaching
- social interaction
-safety
mainly focused around the elderly
What is the need for AAL?
- create better living conditions
- support caregivers and medical staff with behavioral and alerting information (PREVENTION)
- communication
-safety
-security
What examples are provided for each area of application for AAL technologies
coaching = logging, lifestyle management, agenda reminder
social interaction = keeping in touch, collaborative gaming
safety = fall handling/detection, home interface
What types of sensors are used in fall detection?
- wearable
- visual
- ambient/non-wearable
- sensor fusion
What is a wearable sensor?
- is apart of a “smart home technology”
- embedded in our phones, smartwatches
-monitors biological, behavioural, and environmental data
-to assess the postural stability of an older adult - detect and classify falls
-analyze “gait” (how you walk)
What does each of the following items do: accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer?
accelerometer = electromechanical devices that measure linear acceleration and motion
gyroscope= gives info about ANGULAR VELOCITY
magnetometer = detects MAGNETIC STRENGTH in 3 directions
What are roll, yaw, and pitch?
- has to with the 3D motion of your head
- Roll = movement of head in the x-axis (front to back)
-Yaw = movement of head in z axis (vertical axis)
-pitch = movement of head in y axis (side to side axis)
What are reasons why many seniors do not like wearables?
- forget to put them on**
- don’t like it hanging around their neck (not a pretty necklace of jewels!)
- embarassed**
- breach of privacy **
-have to replace batteries
What is a visual/ image processing sensor?
mostly cameras
- RGB = creates images that replicate human vision, capture light at red/gree/blue wavelengths
- RGB-D depth = like x-box kinect , RGB camera+ depth component
- Infrared = detects thermal energy and converts it into an electrical signal –> produces image!
What are the advantages and disadvantages of
What are ambient sensors?
-embedded in the enviroment (person’s immediate surroundings)
- non-wearable sensor
-helps to promote safety and activity!
-ex: simple alarm for falling
What are advantages and disadvantages of ambient sensor systems and image-based processing systems for fall detection?
Advantage:
- operate in low light areas
-more privacy
-more comprehensive analysis of user’s posture
Disadvantage:
- cannot be installed or operated outdoors
- blind spots where sensors are installed
- only can detect the person (not aware of other things in environment like pets)
-$$$ setup
-$$$ home renovations required
Define sensor fusion and describe its advantages and disadvantages?
Sensor fusion = combination of 2 sensors at once (ambient&wearable, visual & wearable, Visual & ambient)
Advantages:
- increase accuracy of detecting falls
Disadvantage:
- not 100% reliable (was the fall accidental or self-initiated?)
- $$$$
Summarize pros and cons of AAL technologies for home monitoring.
Common safety monitoring is “home cooking” because first sign of cognitive disorders are often easily seen in behavioural variations during meal prep or stovetop/oven handling! –> prevent injury and stay safe!
Advantages:
- can be less invasive and good at activity detection and vital sign monitoring (environmental sensors)
Disadvantages:
- Cost $$$
- breach of privacy
-requires large data set to build models –> needing immediate instalment and operation = old person MAD
- continuous updating of patients info to help ADAPT system to their needs
-need interdisciplinary collab
- can be embarasing to wear something –> therefore “miniaturization” of tech might be beneficial!
