Altitude Flashcards
what is medium altitude and what is high altitude?
med: 5000 -10 000 ft
high: more then 10 000 ft
when does barometric air pressure decrease?
as altitude increases
what is oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve?
small change in percent saturation of hemoglobin is observed w decreasing p02 until altitude of 10 000 ft
what is the critical alveolar p02 when a person loses consciousness?
23 000 ft
How does the critical alveolar po2 of a person occur?
Decreased density of air –> decreased external air resistance –> external work is decreased at altitude in sprint type activities where high velocities are involved.
when does air temp decrease?
6.5 C per 1000 meters of altitude or 2C per 1000 ft.
what happens to air with increasing altitude?
Air becomes increasingly dry –> water loss via respiratory tract is higher at high altitude.
what is solar radiation?
UV radiation is more intense at high altitude –> sunburn, snow blindness
what happens to force of gravity with distance from earths center?
decreased with distance so higher altitudes should have a favourable effect on jumping and throwing events
what is equation for VO2?
VO2 = (HR X SV) X (CaO2 - CvO2)
what happens to CaO2 at increasing altitude?
decreases
what is the most important long term adaptation to altitude?
increase in bloods 02 carrying capacity
why does hemoglobin concentration increase during first 2 days at altitude?
- decrease in plasma volume and increase in RBC production by bone marrow
- dependent on iron intake
