What is the purpose of an Endoscope?
examines interior of an organ or cavity in body- direct
What are the types of Endoscopes?
Rigid- simple tubes containing glass iod lenses, eye piece and connector for light cable
Flexible- used for GI or resp tract
Video- no optic fibres, scope is robust
What are the advantages of Endoscopes?
less trauma, pain and quicker recovery
reduced infection rates
take tissue samples/ fluid
What are the disadvantages of Endoscopes?
difficult to clean- no autoclave
careful storage
surgery may be still required- if cannot foreign body be retrieved
What are the cleaning considerations of Endoscopes?
cold sterilised using disinfectant, first wash in detergent and water to remove gross contaminants
Flush channels and immerse in disinfectant for the appropriate period of time (manufacturer guidelines)
Wear PPE!
What is the purpose of an CT?
uses a computer and a rotating x-ray device to create detailed, cross-sectional images, or slices, of organs and body parts- orthopedic and body cavity details
What are the advantages of CT?
cheaper/ quicker than MRI, examines skeletal system in more detail
patient more accessible in CT scanners, very detailed cross-sectional radiographs
What are the disadvantages of CT?
heavy sedation needed, using ionising radio exposure, expensive, artefacts- concentric rings
