Alternative Imaging Technology Flashcards
What does a cat scan allow us to see?
Visualize structures in different planes w/o tissue superimposition
What is a cat scan?
Use of x Rays and a computer to produce images of the internal anatomy of an animal in cross section
In a cat scan what contains the x Ray tubes and X-ray detections?
Gantry
What position are animals placed for cat scans?
Vd or DV or lateral Recumbency
How big is the gantry?
20-25 inches in diameter
When are cat scans used?
To diagnose CNS diseases affecting the brain, spinal cord, and limbo sacral spine. Also bones
What is MRI?
Use of a magnetic field and radio waves to produce images of the internal anatomy in cross section
The degree of absorption and rate or release of radio waves in an MRI depend on what?
Chemical composition of tissues
Is ionizing radiation used in MRis?
No
What are MRIs best to image for?
Soft tissue organs
What is nuclear scintigraphy?
Use of radioactive material to create images that are indicative of physiologic activity in internal organs
What species is nuclear scintigraphy mostly used in?
Horses
Will NS provide anatomical detail?
No
How is NS preformed?
A radioactive isotope is administered IV transcoding ally or by insufflation
If there is increased metabolic activity what will happen to the radioactive isotope?
It will be more absorbed by the target tissue
