Alternative fuels Flashcards
1
Q
Ethanol (4)
A
- Biofuel
- Produced from plant material
- Made from the fermentation of plants
- Often mixed with petrol
2
Q
Pros and cons of ethanol
A
-Carbon neutral (co2 taken in by plants)
- Engines need to be converted
- Not widely available
- As demand increases, so will food prices
3
Q
Biodiesel (3)
A
- Biofuel
- Produced from vegetable oils
- Can be mixed with ordinary diesel fuel
4
Q
Pros/cons of biodiesel
A
- Carbon neutral
- Engines do not need to be converted
- Produces less sulfur dioxide/particulates than ordinary diesel fuel
- Can’t make enough to completely replace diesel
- Expensive to make
5
Q
Hydrogen gas(3)
A
- Can be used to power vehicles
- Get the hydrogen from the electrolysis of water
- This takes electrical energy which comes from a renewable source to split it up
6
Q
Pros/cons of hydrogen gas
A
-Clean: combines with oxygen in the air to produce just water.
- Need a special/expensive engine
- Hydrogen isn’t widely available
- Hard to store(it is explosive)
