Departure alternate
(What and when)

Conditions

A

When weather conditions on departure are below the instrument minima for a return to land

  • Only from the approved list in the route guide
  • meets alternate Aerodrome criteria

Requirement to nominate an alternate

A

Destination has a ground based air other than an NDB published in the route guide AND

For atleast 1 hour before and after ETA at destination, met reports and forecasts indicate

  • ceiling will be 1000’ above DA/MDA
  • vis 5 kms or 2 kms above published minima whichever is GREATER

Conditions for departure when weather is below minima at ETA

A
  • atleast one aerodrome with 1000’ ceiling above DA/MDA and vis 5kms or 2 kms more than published whichever is GREATER

OR

  • two alternate aerodromes that meet the alternate aerodrome criteria

Cloud ceiling at or above commencement alt AND vis 5km by day or 8km by night

Alternate aerodrome criteria

A

PRECISION

Ceiling 600 or 200 above minima (whichever is greater)
Visibility 3000 or 1000 above minima whichever is greater

NON PRECISION

Ceiling 800 or 200 above minima (whichever is greater)
Visibility 4000 or 1500 above minima whichever is greater
