biofeedback -technique by which once can monitor and control involuntary activity of body’s organs
hypnosis
hallucinations- perception in the absence of a stimulus
out-of-body experience - sense that consciousness has left the body
- commonly reported during near death experience
deja vu- feeling of reliving experience that is actually new
meditation- use of variety of techniques to produce a state of consciousness characterized by a state of detachment
drugs - chemical substance that alters biological processes

social role playing- people act out the role of hypnotic subject and act out accordingly
altered state of consciousness - akin to effects of anesthesia
dissociation / absorption - splitting of mental processes ito two separate simultaneous streams of awareness

psychosis hypnagogia delirium tremens charles bonnet syndrome focal epilepsy drug-induced sensory deprivation
elements of drug abuse
abuse; causes recurrent problems associated with use of drug
tolerance- occurs when grreater doses are required to achieve the same effect
physiological dependence - body adjusts to and becomes dependent on substance
psychological dependence - developing a craving for a drug and can lead to a clinically significant impairment/distress
addiction- body requires drug in order to function w/o reaction; painful withdrawal symptoms
psychoactive drugs
chemical affecting mental processes and behaviour by temporarily changing conscious awareness by affecting biochemical reactions in the nervous system
types of psychoactive drugs
sedative-hypnotics; used to reduce tension and anxiety-, inducing calm or sleep
psychostimulants; drugs that increases alertness, reduce fatigue and elevate mood states
psychedelics; affect mood, thought, memory judgment and perception
