Alston Flashcards
1
Q
Double standard argument
A
- The sense experience that p provides prima facie justification to the belief that p.
- Religious experience has some [worrisome] feature f
- But sense experience has feature f as well
- So, f does not prevent the religious experience that p from providing prima facie justification to the belief that p.
essentially the argument is pointing out that sense and religious experience contain similar mechanisms, so to assume that sense experience gives stronger justification seems like a double standard- religious experience happens less than sense experience but that doesn’t make it more unreliable
