alloys and metalic bonding Flashcards
what is metallic bonding?
electrostatic attraction between metal ions and the de-localised electrons that surround them. It is like a ‘sea of electrons’ around the metal ions which are arranged in a lattice structure.
properties of stainless steel (alloys)
Iron, with 18% chromium, a 8% nickel
Chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to create a protective layer to make the mixture stainless, high corrosion resistant and rust resistant
i.e: making cutlery, cooking items and medical tools
properties of mild steel (alloys)
Mild steel is an Iron (Fe) alloy with the addition of small amounts of carbon
- Different grades of mild steel are defined by their differing levels of carbon.
- A magnetic metal due to its ferrite content
- Good malleability with cold-forming possibilities
i.e: wire, fencing, furniture, nails, automobiles
properties of brass (alloys)
70% copper and 30% zinc
- Susceptible to cracking
I.e: musical instruments, door locks, coins
properties of bronze (alloys)
