allotropes of carbon and nonochemistry Flashcards
what are the 2 materials made from carbon?
graphite and diamond
name 3 properties of graphite
black, soft and slippery, high melting point, insoluble in water, conducts electricity
name 3 properties of diamond
colourless, transparent, very hard, high melting point, insoluble in water, does not conduct electricity
how is diamond formed?
when extreme heat and pressure forces carbon deposits to crystallise deep inside the earth
when is graphite made?
when carbon deposits are changed when metamorphic rock forms
what allows a diamond to be shaped when it is formed?
slight imperfections occur forming cleaving planes allowing them to be shaped
what causes the mark on a paper with graphite?
layers slide off and mark the paper
how many electrons do carbon atoms have in the outer shell?
4
describe how the carbon atoms are attached in a diamond?
every atom is attached to four others in a three dimensional
tetrahedral lattice
why does diamond have a high melting point?
the arrangement of carbon bonds gives strength in all directions
why does diamond not conduct electricity?
there is an absence of free electrons
