Interaction between allopurinol and azathioprine

A
  • AZA is metabolised to 6MP
  • 6MP is metabolised by both xanthine oxidase and TPMT
  • ALL inhibits xanthine oxidase
  • so only TMPT can metabolise AZA (some patients have low/no TMPT)
  • can become toxic
