What drug class is first line treatment for relief of the itching, sneezing, and rhinorrhea that characterize mild to moderate allergic rhinitis?

A

Oral second generation H1-antihistamines

Examples: Fexofenadine (Allegra) is nonsedating and free of CNS-impairing effects, even in higher-than-recommended doses. Loratadine (Claritin) and desloratadine (Aerius) are nonimpairing and nonsedating in recommended doses, but may cause sedation at higher doses. Cetirizine (Reactine) can cause sedation in recommended doses.
