A1: Histosol
16 inches or more of organic material (muck/Hemic/Fibric)
A2: Histic Epipedon
A thick organic soil horizon (8-24 inches)
that is saturated with water at some period of the year (unless the soil is artificially drained) and that is at or near the surface of a mineral soil
A3: Black Histic
A organic layer peat/mucky peat/muck that starts within the first 6 inches and is 8 inches or more in thickness and is above 10yr 3-2 mineral soil
A4: Hydrogen Sulfide
A hydrogen sulfide odor occurring past a depth of 12 inches, side effect of anaerobic respiration
A5: Stratified Layers
Stratified Soil Layers starting at a depth of 6 inches, at least one layer must be 10yr 3-1 or organic and remaining layers must be 10yr 3-2, must be 70 percent coated if sand
A6: Organic Bodies
At least 2 percent organic material within 6 inches of the soil surface
A7: 5cm Mucky Mineral
2 inches of Mucky Mineral soil within the first 6 inches of soil
A8: Muck Presence
LRR: U only A layer of 10yr 3-1 muck starting at a depth of 0-6 inches
A9: 1cm Muck
LRR: P & T only. A .5 inch layer of 10yr 3-1 muck starting at a depth of 0-6 inches
A11: Depleted below dark surface
A dark layer that is 6 inches or less thick sits above a depleted or gleyed layer. The gleyed layer has to be 6 inches thick or 2 inches if mixed with soil
A12: Thick Dark Surface
A black layer 12 inches or more in thickness that sit directly above a debleted or gleyed matrix
