mental health continuum
A theoretical line used to represent the the mental health state of a person that varies over time
order of continuum
mentally healthy - satisfactory level of emotional and behavioural adjustment
mental health problem - disruption to an individuals usual emotional and social welbeing
mental illness- emotional or behavioural difficulties that lead to functional impairment
biopsychosocial model
biological, psychological and social factors that interact to determine an individuals health.
The biopsychosocial model is a holistic view of health - it takes into account all aspects of the individual and their environment.
factors
biological - physiologically based or determined influences, often not under our control eg. genetics, neurochemistry, IQ
psychological - all the influences associated with mental processes eg. how we think, learn, decide and manage stress, temperment, substance abuse
social - factors such as our skill in interacting with others, the environment, social support and isolation eg. socialising and interaction, sleep habits, exercise, acces to support, family, friendships and relationships, substance abuse
schizophrenia
hallucinations & delusions ?
affects mental functioning and changes personality of an individual
hallucinations are smelling, tasting, seeing things and hearing voices that are not present in the real world, only viewable to them
delusions are false beliefs of persecution, gradeur or guilt and being under external control of someone else. people who have delusions tend to believe they have super powers.
phobia
A non-psychotic illness chatcterised by extreme anxiety. Fear and tension that something will negatively affect them which leads to difficulty in carrying out daily activities
fear+digust=phobia
4Ps
pre-disposing (why me) - increasing the likelihood of developing a mental health disorder eg. hormones, gender, genetics
precipitating (why now) - contributes to the occurence of a mental health disorder eg. substance abuse, stress, sleeping habits
perpertuating (why does it continue) - contributes to the maintenance of a mental health disorder and inhibits recovery eg. rumination, access to mental health programs
protective (what can i rely on) - Helps prevent and protect the development of a mental health disorder eg. social support, positive relationships, good health condition
Psychological 4P
Predisposing: attachment style, personality traits, insecurities
Precipitating: recent loss, stress, reexperience
perpetuating: personality traits, coping mechanism, beliefs of self
Protective: coping skills, cognitive behaviour
Biological 4P
Predisposing: Genetic vulnerability, birth complications, traumatic brain injury
Precipitating: poor sleep, substance misuse
perpetuating: poor response to medication
protective: adequate diet, general good sleep, resilience
Social 4P
predisposing: domestic violence, poverty, divorce
precipitating: school stressors, loss of significant relationships
perpetuating: poor finance, ongoing transitions
Protective: community, family, financial support
