3 main needs for digitization.
- To preserve
- To make documents more accessible
- To reuse
Problems in Digital Preservation
- Hardware getting out of date
- Software or data format getting out of date
- Corruption or Deterioration of storage media over time
Preserving the original computers, operating systems and software, as well as the information itself - this can lead to the creation of a kind of ‘library museum’s.
Technology preservation
Keeping the information in its original form, and creating software systems which will mimic the operation of obsolete computers in modern environment.
Emulation
Continually moving the information to newer computer systems, so as to keep it usable on up-to-date hardware and software. This is a good solution, in that the information is always available on the latest technology, but it requires continual investment to keep things up-to-date.
Migration
To preserve your materials, you can:
- Use readable metadata and the most frequently used data formats
- Monitor the quality of the media
-Refresh digital records - Migrate the digital objects into newer supported formats
- Use preservation standards where possible

Records
Records or classes of records, in any forms in whole or in parts created or received by a government agency in the conduct of its affairs, and have been restrained by that government agency or it’s successors as evidence or because of the information contained therein.
