alkenes Flashcards
alkenes are?
hydrocarbons with a double carbon carbon bond that is always saturated
what does the carbon carbon double bond have?
high electron density so its easy to be attracted by electrophiles
what is the pi bond?
a pi bond has sideways overlap and is above and below the bonding atoms
a pi bond is also weaker then a sigma bond
what is the sigma bond?
the sigma bond has direct overlap of orbitals and is between bonding atoms
what molecular shape does alkenes have
trignal planer at 120 degrees
what is steroisomerism
compounds with the same structural formula but different arrangement of atoms in space
what is a z-isomer?
it is substitutes that are on the same side
VAS HAPPEING
what is a e-isomer?
either side of the substrate
in order to get e/z isomerism you need?
double bond (restricted rotation)
the C atoms in the C=C need two different groups ( different C.I.P priorities )
what is cis isomers?
same side
only applies to E if there is a H on each carbon atom
what is trans isomers
different sides (z)
