Alkenes Flashcards
When do alkenes combust completely and what is the product of complete combustion?
Plenty of O2. Product is H2O and CO2
When do alkenes combust incompletely and what is the product of incomplete combustion?
Not enough oxygen. Product is H2O, CO2 AND ALSO Carbon and CO
What is the flame when alkenes completely combust?
Smoky
What is the flame when alkenes incompletely combust?
smoky yellow flame and less energy
How do alkenes react with other compounds?
They react via addition reactions
Reaction of Alkenes with with hydrogen
Addition atoms across the carbon-carbon double bond so that the double bond
becomes a single carbon-carbon bond.
a) With hydrogen - hydrogenation; requires a higher temperature and a nickel
catalyst
Reaction of Alkenes with with steam
b) With - hydration; requires high temperature, pressure, and
concentrated phosphoric acid (H3PO4) as a catalyst
Reaction of Alkenes with with halogens
c) With Br2/Cl2/I2 - addition of halogens
