Alkenes Flashcards
Are alkenes saturated or unsaturated?
Unsaturated.
Why are alkenes reactive?
They have a double bond, which is an area of high electron density.
What is an electrophile?
An electron pair acceptor.
What happens to bromine water in the presence of alkenes?
Goes from orange to colourless.
When are multiple products formed in electrophilic addition?
When using unsymmetrical alkenes.
When is a carbocation more stable?
The more alkyl groups attached to it, the more stable.
Why do alkyl chains increase the stability of the carbocation?
They push electrons into the positive carbocation.
What is the major product?
The product that is most likely to form (most stable).
What do alkenes join to form?
Addition polymers.
Are polyalkenes saturated or unsaturated?
Saturated.
Why are addition polymers unreactive?
They are non-polar.
What intermolecular forces are in polyalkenes?
Van der Waals forces.
What are the properties of long, straight chain polyalkenes?
Strong and rigid.
Why are long, straight chain polyalkenes strong and rigid?
*longer polymer chain
*closer together
*stronger forces
What intermolecular forces does PVC have?
Permanent dipole-dipole (polar).
