Alkene Hydroformylation Flashcards
1
Q
What Hydroformylation
A
forms an aldehyde from an alkene, carbon monoxide and hydrogen
cobalt carbonyl hydride catalyst
2
Q
hydroformylation catalytic cycle
A
- activation
- alkene coordination
- hydride migration
- carbonyl coordination
- alkyl migration
- hydrogen oxidative addition
- reductive elimination
3
Q
Side Reactions
A
- Branched aldehydes
alpha carbon doesn’t migrate
- alkenes
hydrogen adds before CO
- alcohols
aldehyde C=O coordinates
- isomerisation of alkene
hydride migration and elimination
4
Q
Migrating groups
A
Any hydrocarbon ligand can migrate to CO
- alkyl
- alkenyl
- aryl
- alkynyl
Can also use other unsaturated ligands other than CO e.g. alkenes
5
Q
Reductive elimination variations
A
eliminate with R group instead of hydride
- alkyl get ketone
- OH get acid
- OR get ester
- NR2 get amide
