alkanes and their properties Flashcards
Topic 7: Organic Chemistry
Alkanes and their Properties
Crude oil a fossil fuel formed mosy from dead sea creatures (eg. plantion). It is the source of many fuels and other
chemicals such as plastic
It is a mixture of hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons are compounds made up of hyduagen & Carbon atons only
Most of the hydrocarsons in crude oil are of a group called alkanes
AlKanes are made up of a chain of carbon atoms
with as many hydrogen atoms bonded to it as possible.
E.g. This is propane
the alkane with 3 carbors

Geneval Formula: CnHan+2
Take number of Catoms
x2 and +2 and you get number of Matoms.
The properties of alkanes change with the number of carbons in the molecule.
boiling point increases
→ IMF between molecules get strangen.
the viscosity (thickness) increases
1) longer molecules get tangled together
