Alkali Metals Flashcards
What elements are in the alkali metals
Li Na K Rb Cs Fr
Which group are the alkali metals
Group 1
What are the physical properties of the alkali metals
. Soft
. Shiny and silver when freshly cut
. Tarnish in air within seconds
What are the trends in the alkali metals
. Melting and boiling points decrease as you go down
. Densities increase as you go down
What happens when sodium reacts with water
. Floats
. Melts into a ball
. Moves around the water
. Bubbles produced
What happens when you react lithium with water
. Floats on the water
. Moves around
. Bubbles produced
What happens when you react potassium with water
. Floats on surface . Moves around on the surface . Melts into a ball . Bubbles produced . Bursts into a lilac flame
What happens when you react rubidium and caesium with water
More violent reaction that potassium, reaction can be explosive.
Explain the trend in reactivity within the alkali metals
The atoms react in order to obtain a full outer shell. They do this by losing the outer electron. The more shells there are, the further the outer electron is from the nucleus - so the easier it is to lose.
