Algebra Yr 7 Flashcards
How do you find out if coordinates are on a straight line?
Use the algebraic equation to solve - by putting each of the coordinates into the equation
For example for coordinates:
(0,1), (1,2), (2,3)
The equation is y=x+1
If each coordinate pair does not work in the equation the line is not straight (as when it is straight the relation between x and y is always the same)
How to solve for x
Do the same thing to each side
Subtract things until you are left with just x on one side
Long division when the denominator is larger than numerator
Use decimal point and zeros. 12/15=
- 15) 12.000
- 15 into 12 doesn’t go (put zero)
- put the decimal point back in
- 15 into 120 goes 8 times
- answer is 0.8
How to convert decimals to fractions
Count how many decimal places there are in the decimal number.
3 DP = 1000’s
2DP = 100’s
1DP = 10’s
- For example 0.084 has 3 decimal places
- It is 84/1000
- CANCEL CANCEL CANCEL down your fraction to lowest possible terms
- 84/1000
- 48/500
- 21/250
Answer = 21/250
If a question has the word “solve” or “solve for …”
use understanding of algebra to work out the answer
What do brackets do in an equation?
Force the order of operation
Which order do you write algebraic terms in?
Alphabetical
Collecting like terms:
- can you add together 2ab + 4ba?
- can you add 2ab with 7b
- Yes = order of ab or ba doesn’t matter here
2. No = 7b is not same as ab
Expand means?
Multiply out the brackets
Area of a rectangle
L times W
so with algebra is X
