Algebra Terminology Flashcards
Absolute Value
the magnitude of a real number without regard to its sign. Also called modulus.
Adding or Subtracting Fractions
Find the lowest common denominator then perform the operation
Algebraic Expression
an expression that contains only algebraic numbers, variables and algebraic operations.
Associative Properties
(a + b) + c = a + (b +c)
Associative Properties
(a + b) + c = a + (b +c)
Coefficient
a numerical or constant quantity placed before and multiplying the variable in an algebraic expression (e.g., 4 in 4x y).
Commutative Properties
ab = ba or a+b = b+a
Distributive Properties
(a+b) + (c+d) = a(c+d) + b(c+d)
Element
Member of a set
Equation
Is an expression with an equal sign A + B = C
Exponents
a quantity representing the power to which a given number or expression is to be raised, usually expressed as a raised symbol beside the number or expression (e.g., 3 in 23 = 2 × 2 × 2).
Expression
Is a phrase. Not including an equal A - B
Factors
a number or quantity that when multiplied with another produces a given number or expression.
Fractions
a numerical quantity that is not a whole number (e.g., 1/2, 0.5).
Identity Properties
1 + 0 = 1, 1(A) = A
Integer
a whole number; a number that is not a fraction.
Irrational Numbers
any real number that cannot be expressed as a ratio a/b, where 1) a and b are integers 2) b is non-zero and 3) a and b have no integer common factors other than 1.
Linear Equation
an equation between two variables that gives a straight line when plotted on a graph.
Natural Numbers
the positive integers (whole numbers) 1, 2, 3, etc., and sometimes zero as well.
Nonlinear Equation
one whose output is not directly proportional to its input;
Order of Operation
- Parentheses, 2. Exponents, 3. Multiplication or Division, 4. Addition or Subtraction
Prime Number
A prime number (or a prime) is a natural number greater than 1 that has no positive divisors other than 1 and itself.
Product
a quantity obtained by multiplying quantities together, or from an analogous algebraic operation. The result of Multiplication
Quotient
a result obtained by dividing one quantity by another.
Rational Numbers
a rational number is any number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction a/b of two integers, with the denominator b not equal to zero.
Set
A well defined collection of distinct objects
Terms
Terms are separated by a + or -
Variable
A letter or symbol usually x
Whole Numbers
a number without fractions; an integer.
