Algebra Flashcards
What is a term?
Collection of numbers, letters + brackets.
What are the seven easy rules?
1) when multiplying add powers.
2) when dividing subtract numbers.
3) when raising 1 power to another multiply them.
4) anything to power 1 just itself.
5) anything to power 0 just 1.
6) 1 to any power =s 1.
7) fractions apply power to both top + bottom.
What are the three tricky rules?
8) negative power flip other way up and make power positive.
9) fractional powers power 1/2=square root. Power 1/3=cube root. Power 1/4=fourth root.
10) two stage fractional powers split fraction into root + a power minus is square root forget to turn it upside down root first then power.
How do you multiply out single brackets?
Thing outside bracket multiplies each separate term inside bracket.
How do you expand double brackets?
Multiply everything in first bracket by everything in second bracket.
How do you expand triple brackets?
Multiply two brackets together then third bracket with result.
What are the steps to factorising?
1) take out largest number that goes into all the terms.
2) each letter in turn take out highest power that goes into all the terms.
3) Open bracket + fill in all bits needed to reproduce each term.
4) check answer by multiplying out bracket + making sure matches original expression.
What does D.O.T.S. stand for?
Difference Of Two Squares.
