1
Q
Algebra
A
- math involving variables
2
Q
Variable
A
- a letter representing a specific number or all numbers
3
Q
Variable (Equation)
A
- the variable represents all numbers or all numbers with specific exceptions
4
Q
Constant
A
- number or symbol, like π, that doesn’t change in value
5
Q
Term
A
- a product of constants and variables, including powers of variables
- 5, x2, 6y2, x5y6z7
6
Q
Coefficient
A
- the constant factor of a term
- when no coefficeint is written the coefficient is 1
7
Q
Expression
A
- a collection of one or more terms joined by addition or subtraction
- has no equals sign (=)
- x + y, y2 - x2, 1 + 3x3 - y
8
Q
Monomial
A
- an expression with one term
- 43, 5x2, y
9
Q
Binomial
A
- an expression with two terms
- x + 5, r2 - 25
10
Q
Trinomial
A
- an expression with three terms
- x2 - 25y + 2
11
Q
Polynomial
A
- an expression with any number of terms, but only one variable
- 5x2 - 7x + 14
12
Q
Linear
A
- a term or expression with a single power of a variable
- y, x - 5
13
Q
Quadratic
A
- a term or expression with a squared variable
- y2, z2 - 17
14
Q
Cubic
A
- an term or expression with a cubed variable
- t3, u3 + 7
15
Q
17x
A
linear monomial
16
Q
3x - 5
A
linear binomial with a constant term
17
Q

Q
Significant Figures
A
- hose digits that carry meaning contributing to its measurement resolution. This includes all digits excecpt
- 0.0500 (3)
- 3700 (2)
- 47.0034 (6)

Q
Direct Variation
A
- two variables vary directly
- y = kx
- y = 2x
-
sometimes obfuscated:
- y = -3x
- y/x = -3
- 1/x = -3/y

Q
Inverse Variation
A
- a variable varies by the inverse of the other variable
- y = k*1/x
- instead of multiplying you end up dividing, scaling inversely
