Alfieri Flashcards
“I am inclined to notice the ruins in things perhaps because I was born in Italy… I only came here when I was twenty-five.”
Alfieri is of Italian decent and so is in a position to empathise with the other characters.
“And I sat there many afternoons asking myself why, being an intelligent man, I was so powerless to stop it.”
Alfieri performs the Greek chorus he can comment on the action but is powerless to stop it or change it.
“You won’t have a friend in the world Eddie, even those who understand will turn against you…”
Alfieri knows Eddie is going to betray the brothers, even though he hasn’t said it, and he is trying to stop him desperately.
“This is not God, Marco. You hear? Only God makes justice.”
Alfieri is trying to tell Marco that he cannot control justice that he must rely on God.
