How did he start his premiership?
Public hangings to anyone involved in fathers death.
Who was his tutor?
Pobedonostev. He was tutored from 21 as he knew he would be tsar. He wrote Alexander manifesto ‘unshakeable autocracy’. Believed in nationalism, anti semitism and old fashioned ideas.
Why was Empress Feodorovna respected?
She was a strong wife and looked the part.
Why did Alexander look the part?
He was 6’4 and physically strong. Had a clear mindset and knew what he wanted.
What happened to the local government?
Land captains 1889 could override elections, disregarded zemstva decisions. They were responsible for law enforcement and government in the countryside, could ignore normal judicial system. In 1890, the zemstva was put under government control.
What happened to policing?
The police numbers increased. Recruit spies who would act as revolutionaries to catch each other. In 1882 the police could arrest, detain, question, imprison or exile anyone who knew about the crime, or knew the person who did the crime. Once arrested they had no legal representation.
What happened to the judicial system?
The minister of justice to have greater control in dismissal of judges. In 1889 volost courts under jurisdiction of land captains in countryside and judges in towns.
What happened to education?
Professors appointed on religion, moral and patriotic orientation.
