Alcohols, haloalkanes and analysis 4.2* Flashcards
What can alcohols be classified as?
- primary alcohols
- secondary alcohols
- tertiary alcohols
What is a primary alcohol?
An alcohol in which the carbon that the OH functional group is attached to is only bonded to one other carbon chain
What is a secondary alcohol?
An alcohol in which the carbon which the OH functional group is attached to is bonded to two other carbon chains
What is a tertiary alcohol?
An alcohol in which the carbon that the OH functional group is attached to is bonded to three other carbon chains
How does the shape of a molecule change the boiling point?
Boiling point increases as chail length increases as there are more induced dipole dipole intermolecular forces which results in more energy needed to be overcome
Are alcohols polar?
yes
