Alcohols, Carboxylic acids and Esters Flashcards
What solutions do alcohols give when dissolved in water?
Neutral (pH7). Their molecules do not form ions.
What are the first three alcohols?
methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (CH3CH2OH), propanol (CH3CH2CH2OH)
What is the name given to a family of compounds containing carbon atoms?
Homologous series
What are the uses of alcohols?
Fuels and solvents. Ethanol appears in alcoholic drinks.
How is ethanol made?
Fermentation using yeast
What products do alcohols make when burnt with oxygen?
carbon dioxide and water
When balancing alcohol combustion equations, what order do you check the elements in?
carbons, hydrogens, oxygens
What is an alcohols reaction with sodium?
Forms hydrogen gas
What does ethanol react with sodium to produce?
sodium ethanoate and hydrogen
What are alcohols oxidised to form?
Carboxylic acids
What is vinegar a mixture of and how is it made?
ethanoic acid and water, made by reacting ethanol and oxygen
What is ethanoic acid?
Carboxylic acid
How do you know carboxylic acids are acidic?
They dissolve in water to produce hydrogen ions (-COOH becomes -COO and H+)
What three products do carboxylic acids form when reacted with a metal carbonate?
carbon dioxide, water, metal salt of the acid eg. sodium ethanoate
What is formed when an alcohol and a carboxylic acid react?
Ester eg. ethyl ethanoate
