Alcohols Flashcards
B.P?
The alcohols have relatively low volatility and
high boiling points due to their ability to form
hydrogen bond between alcohol molecules.
Primary alcohols [0] to
Aldehyde ——> Carboxylic acid
reagents (both): acidified potassium dichromoate and dilute S04
Aldehyde - distil
Carboxylic acid - heat under reflux
Secondary alcohols [0] to
Ketones
reagents: dilute S04 and acidifed potassium dichromate
conditions : heat under reflux
Eq:
alcohol + [0] —–> Ketone + H20
Tertiary alcohols [0] to
This cannot be further [0] using dilute S04 and acidified potassium dichromate, only combustion.
This is because the Hydrogen atom is not bonded to the Carbon with the -OH
