Alcohol Use Disorder / Alcoholism
A disease in which a person has a physical and psychological dependence on alcohol. There is NO CURE, only life long recovery.
Withdrawal
the discomfort and distress that follow discontinuing an addictive drug or behavior
Delerium Tremens (DTs)
a rapid onset of confusion usually caused by withdrawal from alcohol; symptoms include shaking, confusion, and hallucinations
Early stage (alcoholism)
Drinks often to relieve stress, leading to a necessity for stress management
Middle stage (alcoholism)
Drinker denies/tries to hide the problem, drinks when alone, drinks first thing in the morning
Late stage (alcoholism)
Drinker becomes aggressive &/or isolates themselves from friends/family, malnutrition occurs & if try to quit they experience withdrawal
Tolerance
The body needs more of a substance to feel the SAME effects it used to with LESS of the substance.
