substance abuse and substance dependence
symptoms of a person whose body is accustomed to alcohol?
anxious, depressed, weak, restless, and unable to sleep. , Muscle tremors, blood pressure and temperature may increase.
What are delirium tremens? (DTs)
person becomes delirious as well as remulous and has hallucinations that are primarily visual, but may be tactile as well. EX: see snakes, creatures, cockroaches, skin crawling, shakes.
What is an addiction?
more severe substance use disorder that is characterized by having more symptoms, tolerance, and withdrawal. Use more of the substance than intended, by trying unsuccessfully to stop, by having physical or psychological problems made worse by the drug.
What is tolerance?
larger doses of the substance being needed to produce the desired effect, the effects of the drug becoming markedly less of the usual amount is taken
What is withdrawal?
the negative physical and psychological effects that develop when a person stops taking the substance or reduces the amount.
Most stigmatized disorder?
drug and alcohol abuse
What are alcohol use disorders comorbid with?
several personality disorders, mood disorders, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorder, as well as with other drug use.
Short-term effects of alcohol use?
increase the levels of serotonin and dopamine which may be the source of its ability to produce pleasurable effects, slowed thinking, and memory loss, reduce tension
Long-Term effects of alcohol use?
development of cirrhosis of the liver, liver disease, heart failure, erectile dysfunction, hypertension, stroke, damage to the brain cells, which can cause memory loss.
What is Fetal alcohol Syndrome (FAS)?
intellectual development disorder among children; growth of the fetus is slowed and the cranial, facial, and limb abnormalities can be produced.
