DSM5 - Alcohol intoxication
a - recent ingestion
b - problematic behaviour, or psychological changes
c - one or more of - slurred speech, incoordination, unsteady gait, impaired memory
d - signs and symptoms aren’t attributed to any other medical condition
Alcohol withdrawal syndrome occurs
6-24 hours after last drink and is possibly life threatening
Alcohol withdrawal syndrome signs and symptoms
minor - headache, sweating, agitation, palpations
seizures - convulsions
Hallucinations - Visual, auditory, tactile
Delirium Tremens - hallucinations, disorientation, paranoia, fever, agitation, diaphoresis
Someone going through alcohol withdrawal syndrome sound be given….?
Thiamine! (Vitamin B1) - the brain needs this nutrient

Benzodapine - Valium or Pamax
Dual diagnosis?
alcohol, drug and mental health issues are commonly interlinked. Such as mood disorders and Schizophrenia
Wernicke’s encephalopathy
Caused by lack of thiamine!
Confusion, memory impairment, ataxia (wide gait), vision changes
Korsakoff’s syndrome
Chronic memory disorder caused by a lack of Thiamine.
Memory loss, inability to form or gain new info or memories - permanent damage
