Alcohol Dehydration Lab Flashcards
How does the primacy of alcohols (1, 2, 3*) relate to their reactivity in dehydrations?
3* will produce alkenes, and will have higher reaction temperatures and possible rearrangements. 1* and 2* will produce ethers, with lower reaction temperatures, and a product that is removable by distillation.
What three test reagents will we use?
Br2, KMnO4, and Ce(NH4)2(NO3)6.
What do the test reagents we use test for?
They test for alkene double bonds, or alcohols (Ce)
What is the visible sign of a positive test?
The signs of a positive test are a loss of bromine color, a loss of permanganate color (turning brown), and the formation of a colored complex.
