Class
Sympathomimetic, bronchodilator
Mechanism of Action
Selective beta 2 agonist of adrenergic receptors, bronchiole and peripheral vasculature smooth muscle relaxant
Indications
Bronchospasm in COPD pts, prevention of exercised induced asthma
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, tachycardia, dysrhythmias especially due to digitalis, Synergistic with other sympathomimetics
Adverse Reactions
Dose related HA, fatigue, lightheadedness, irritability, restlessness, aggressive behavior, pulmonary edema, hoarseness, nasal congestion, increased sputum, HTN, tachycardia, dysrhythmias, cox, palpitations, nausea/vomiting, dry mouth epigastric px, tremors
Drug interactions
Tricyclic antidepressants potentiate vascular effects, Beta-blockers are antagonist and may block pulmonary effect. May potentiate hypokalemia
How supplied
MDI 90mcg/spray, Nebulized .5% (5mg/ml) or (.083%) 2.5mg in 3ml neb.
Dosage and Administration
Adult: 2.5mg neb over 10-15 min. MDI 1-2 inhalations (90-180 mcg)
Ped: <20kg - 1.25mg neb over 20 min, repeat once in 20 min.
Duration of Action
Onset:15 min
Peak: 30 min - 2 hr
Duration: 3-4 hrs
Special Considerations
Pregnancy Cat C
May precipitate angina and dysrhythmias, administer only via inhalation
