AL - Data Tabulation Flashcards

1
Q

What is data?

A

Data refers to any collected facts, figures or information used for the purpose of analysis and decision making. It can come from observations, surveys, experiments and records. For eg. The heights of students in a classroom, number of people visiting a website or the temperature over a week.

Q

Types of data

A
  1. Raw data- This includes all unorganised and unprocessed data directly from the source such as recording the scores of a test.
  2. True data - This includes all data or information that represents reality as it is without any error or biasness. For eg. A measurement from a scientific instrument such as barometer.
  3. Arranged data - This data includes information that has been arranged in a specific way in ascending or descending order for the purpose of analysis and decision making. For eg. sorting out surveys age - wise.
  4. Primary data - This is first hand data collected by the researcher themselves for the purpose of analysis and research. For eg. conducting a questionnaire
  5. Secondary data - This refers to data that has been already collected and published and is being used by someone else for their research purposes. For eg. Census data for the aim of demographic research.

Q

What is frequency?

A

Frequency is the number of times a value or numerical occurs in a given dataset. For eg. If 5 students score 80 marks, that means 80 appears 5 times in the given dataset. Hence the frequency of 80 is 5.

Q

What is frequency distribution?

A

Frequency distribution, often represented in a tabular form, is the organizing of data into categories or intervals so as to visualise the frequencies of each category with ease. For example 0-10, 10-20 are intervals and they will have their frequencies written beside them.

Q

What is cumulative frequency?

A

Cumulative means sum total so cumulative frequency is the running total of all the previous frequencies as you move through the frequency distribution table. For eg. The frequency of 10-20 is 5 and 20-30 is 6 so the cumulative frequency for 20-30 will be 5+6 = 11.
